Common Category Mistakes Electrical Contractors Make
Adding Categories You Don't Actually Do the Work For
The most common mistake is treating secondary category slots as free keyword real estate. Adding “Lighting contractor” because you’ve installed a few fixtures, or “EV charging station contractor” after one home charger install, doesn’t match the operational evidence Google expects, and it dilutes the relevance signal your primary category is trying to send.
Leaving the Category List Static as the Business Grows
The opposite mistake also costs visibility: a company that’s genuinely expanded into EV charger installs, or built out a dedicated lighting design offering, but never adds the category, misses out on ranking for the exact searches that new work should be capturing. Revisit your category list whenever your service mix meaningfully changes.
