Google Map Pack: What It Is and How to Rank in It

The Google Map Pack is the block of three local businesses Google shows at the top of search results, above the regular blue links, any time someone searches for a business by category and city or adds "near me." If you are not in it, most searchers never scroll far enough to find you.

What Is the Google Map Pack?

Search "plumber near me" or "HVAC repair Denver" and the first thing Google shows is not a list of websites, it is a map with three business listings underneath it, each with a name, star rating, category, and a Directions link. That block is the Map Pack, sometimes called the local 3-pack. Here is what one actually looks like.

Google Map Pack vs. Normal Organic Results

The Map Pack and the organic results below it are ranked by two different systems. Organic rankings are based mostly on your website: its content, backlinks, and technical SEO. Map Pack rankings are based mostly on your Google Business Profile, your category, reviews, location, and how complete and active that profile is. A business can rank #1 organically and still not appear in the Map Pack at all, and vice versa. If you are new to the difference, our guide on what local SEO actually is is a good place to start.

How Google Decides Who Appears in the Map Pack

Google has said publicly that Map Pack rankings come down to three factors.

Relevance

How well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for. A complete, accurately categorized profile helps Google understand exactly what you do.

Distance

How far your business is from the person searching, or from the location they searched in. Google uses this even when the searcher does not share their exact location.

Prominence

How well known your business is, based on signals like review count, review quality, and links pointing to your business from around the web.

Why Proximity Matters More Than You Would Think

Distance carries more weight in local search than in regular organic search. Two businesses with identical profiles can rank completely differently depending on where the person searching is standing. Someone three blocks from your shop may see you in position one, while someone across town sees a competitor instead. This is also why the same search can return different Map Pack results at different times of day or in different neighborhoods. It is not a bug, it is the system working as designed.

The Ranking Factors You Can Control

These are the levers actually in your hands:

The Factor You Cannot Control

Where the person searching is physically standing is entirely out of your hands. That is exactly why "just Google your own business" is never a reliable way to check your rankings, which is what the next section is about.

How to See Your Real Google Maps Rankings

Searching your own business name and seeing yourself in position one tells you almost nothing. Google personalizes results based on your location, your search history, and even the fact that you have clicked on your own listing before, so you are seeing a version of results built around you, not your customers. To see how you actually rank, you need geo-grid tracking: running the same search from dozens of simulated points spread across your service area and mapping where you show up at each one. A business can rank #1 two blocks from its front door and not show up at all ten minutes away, and geo-grid tracking is the only way to see that whole picture.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Not exactly. Google Maps is the app and website where the results also appear. The Map Pack is the specific 3-listing block Google embeds directly in search results, so you do not have to open Maps separately to see it.
Not directly. Google does show paid Local Services Ads above the Map Pack in some categories, but the Map Pack itself is unpaid. Ranking there is earned through relevance, distance, and prominence, not an ad budget.
Often. New reviews, competitor activity, profile edits, and even the time of day can shift who appears, which is part of why one-time optimization is not enough.
Yes, but less than your Google Business Profile does. Website relevance factors into the relevance signal, but reviews, categories, and profile completeness typically move the needle more.
Because you are not seeing what they see. Your own search is shaped by your location and search history, which is exactly what the geo-grid tracking section above explains.
