Google Removed Q&A From Business Profiles: What to Do Now

The Short Answer

Google has phased out the public Q&A feature on Business Profiles, the section where anyone could post a question and anyone else could answer it. In its place, Google is rolling out an AI-powered answer tool, often called Ask Maps, that generates responses using your Business Profile details, your website, and your customer reviews. If your business relied on Q&A to head off common customer questions, that job now falls to your website’s FAQ content and how complete your Business Profile is.

What Changed, and When

Google didn’t remove Q&A overnight. The change rolled out in stages: first the developer API that let tools read and post Q&A content was retired, then the public-facing Q&A section itself began disappearing from individual Business Profiles. If you go looking for the Q&A tab on your own listing now, in most cases it’s simply gone.

Why Google Made the Change

The original Q&A feature let anyone answer a question about a business, not just the business owner, which meant profiles regularly accumulated outdated, inaccurate, or even fake answers that nobody was responsible for fixing. Google has said it wants to give searchers a fresh, direct answer instead of asking them to dig through old Q&A threads of uncertain accuracy.

What's Replacing It: Ask Maps

Ask Maps uses Google’s Gemini AI to generate a real-time answer to a customer’s question, pulling from your Business Profile information, your website, your reviews, and other information Google can find about your business. It’s rolling out gradually, starting with mobile users, and isn’t available for every category yet. Unlike the old Q&A, there’s no thread for you to directly manage. Instead, the quality of the answer depends on the quality of the information Google can find about you. This fits into Google’s larger push toward AI-generated answers in search, something we cover in more detail in our guide to AI search and local SEO.

What Your Old Q&A Content Means Now

If your profile had useful, accurate Q&A threads, that content isn’t necessarily lost, but it’s no longer public in the same way and shouldn’t be counted on. Before it disappears entirely, it’s worth going back through any Q&A your profile had and pulling out the genuinely useful questions and answers, the ones customers asked most often, so you can rebuild them somewhere you actually control: your website’s FAQ section. Google Business Profile messaging is another feature that has changed recently and is worth setting up correctly.

What To Do Now

Since Ask Maps and Google’s broader AI search features pull from your Business Profile, your website, and your reviews rather than a Q&A thread, the businesses that come out ahead here are the ones that strengthen those three sources directly.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s been phased out for most businesses. The feature is being retired in stages, and Google has replaced it with Ask Maps, an AI-powered tool that answers customer questions in real time instead of relying on a public thread.
Ask Maps is Google’s Gemini-powered tool that generates real-time answers to questions about a business, pulling from that business’s Google Business Profile, website, reviews, and other information Google can find.
There’s no separate setup. Ask Maps pulls from information that already exists about your business, which is exactly why keeping your Business Profile, website, and reviews accurate and complete matters more now, not less.
Yes. If your profile had useful questions and answers, it’s worth pulling out the ones customers asked most often and turning them into a proper FAQ section on your website, where you control the content.
It raises the stakes. With AI tools now pulling directly from website content to answer local questions, a well-structured FAQ page with FAQ schema markup is doing double duty: helping your own SEO and feeding the answers AI tools give to your potential customers.
