How Do You Know If You Need Local SEO?

You probably need local SEO if customers in your area cannot find you when they search for what you do. Test it in five minutes: search your service and city in a private browser window, then check whether your business appears in the map results. If you do not, or competitors outrank you, you need it.

The five-minute test

You do not need a tool for this. You need your phone and a private (incognito) browser window, so your own search history does not skew the results.

  • Search your main service plus your city, for example “roof repair Lakewood.” Note whether you appear in the map results at the top and where.
  • Search the same service with “near me” and see who shows up.
  • Search your exact business name. Your profile should appear first with correct hours, phone, and photos.
  • Repeat the search from a different part of town, or ask a friend across the area to try it. Google weighs distance, so you can rank first near your office and nowhere near a customer ten miles away.
  • Open the top three competitors and compare their review counts and ratings with yours.

Google confirms that distance is one of three ranking factors, along with relevance and prominence, in its explanation of how local results are ranked. That is why a single search from your own desk tells you very little.

Signs you need local SEO

  • You do not appear in the map results for your main services in the areas you want to serve.
  • Competitors with fewer years in business have far more reviews than you.
  • Your phone rings mostly from referrals and repeat customers, and almost never from strangers searching online.
  • Your business name search shows wrong hours, an old address, or a duplicate listing. The guide to a duplicate Google listing explains how to clean that up.
  • You depend on one slow season, and online searches could fill the gaps.

If one or two of these sound familiar, the problem is usually fixable and fairly specific. If most of them do, you are likely invisible online for the searches that matter, and that is where local SEO helps most.

Signs you may not need it yet

Some businesses should wait. If you are booked out for months and do not want more work, more visibility will not help. If you have not set up a Google Business Profile at all, start there first, because it is free and does most of the early work. And if your reviews are poor, fix the service issues causing them before you invite more attention.

Businesses that sell to a narrow group through relationships, such as a contractor who works only for a few property managers, can also do fine without it. Local SEO is for businesses that win customers who did not know them yesterday.

Good to know

Ranking number one in your own neighborhood can make you feel safe while you are invisible everywhere else. Always test from at least two or three locations before you decide how you are doing.

What to check in your own data

The test above shows what a searcher sees. Your own accounts show what is actually happening. In your Google Business Profile performance report, look at calls, direction requests, and website clicks, and compare the last three months with the same months a year ago. In Google Search Console, filter for queries that include your city and see whether impressions are growing.

Then look at your competitors. If the three businesses ahead of you have two or three times your reviews and you have almost none, you already know the first job. My local SEO checklist lays out the order I would tackle things in, and the page on the Google map pack explains what you are competing for.

What to do with the answer

If the test shows you are missing, work through the checklist for the biggest gaps first. If you want to understand why a specific business is not appearing, read why your business is not showing up on Google. If you are not sure whether the cost makes sense yet, what local SEO costs gives realistic ranges so you can plan.

Not sure where you stand?

If you want a plain read on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and how you compare with the businesses showing up ahead of you, I will go through them with you and tell you what to fix first.
