Google Will Now Charge You for Missed Local Services Ads Calls

The Short Answer

Starting October 1, 2026, Google can charge you for a Local Services Ads call you did not answer. If the call comes in during your business hours and the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, it can count as a paid lead. Until now, charges were tied to calls you answered and voicemails customers left.

What Changed

Google told Local Services Ads advertisers about the change in a notice dated August 24, 2026. A few details from that notice and the reporting around it:

Calls outside your business hours are not covered by this rule. If your phone system asks callers to press a key before it routes the call, the 20 second clock starts after they press it, and a caller who never presses a key is not charged. If the first call from someone is not charged, a later call from that same person can still be. Google has said only one charge applies to follow-up calls within 15 days. Google also says it is adding protections against robocalls and spam calls.

Some things are still unclear. Google has not spelled out exactly when the 20 seconds starts counting, how voicemail fits in, or how to dispute a missed call charge.

The Mistake Worth Avoiding

Do not assume a call nobody picks up is free. Because the rule is tied to your business hours, hours in your account that do not match when someone is really available can now cost you money. A shop that lists itself as open until 8 PM but stops answering at 5 is the exact case to fix.

The Takeaway

Every missed call was already costing you a possible job. Now it can cost you ad spend too. Tighten your hours, make sure someone answers, and keep an eye on your lead charges over the next few weeks.
